Bill Inmon, sometimes called the father of the data warehouse concept, defined it as follows: "A data warehouses organizes and stores the data needed for informational, analytical processing over a long time perspective. A data warehouse is a subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant, non-volatile collection of data supporting management's decision-making process". But a data warehouse is just a big container (often gigabytes, sometims terabytes) of data, it has no goal on itself. The goal is to give our users on-line access (via dedicated tools or via a Web browser) to it. Data warehouses exploration tools such as managed query, OLAP and data mining tools are the (financial) justification of building a data warehouse.
