 Learning Objectives

What will you learn at this workshop ?

During this intensive and interactive workshop, we will answer these and other questions:

  • How do you tackle business analysis and modelling with this tool ?
  • What are the best practices in the efficient and productive use of this tool ?
  • How do you facilitate and improve the communication about business requirements, business processes and the software development project with Enterprise Architect ?
  • How can diagrams be simulated in Enterprise Architect ?
  • How do you model tracebility in your model, over different notation formats ?
  • How do you do an impact analysis ?
  • How do you include your own navigation (Top-Down versus Bottom-Up) ?
  • How do you make multi-dimension views for different roles in your organisation ?
  • How do you make versioning with the time-based-modelling capabilities ?
  • How do you make a library with re-use in different notation formats ?

Why do we organise this workshop ?

If your company uses the Enterprise Architect® tool from SparxSystems® (preferably version 15 but version 14 is also ok), and you are an enterprise architect, process analyst, business analyst, functional analyst or data architect, this workshop is for you.

During this workshop, we will model an End-to-End framework with SPARX Enterprise Architect version 14.x/15.x from scratch. By doing this, we will view en learn nearly all the techniques of SPARX EA 14/15. Besides that we will also see and model languages such as ArchiMate, BPMN and UML, both separately but also connected to each other as required in an End-to-End model. Our presenter Christian Gijsels will show the power of end-to-end modelling for business modelling, business understanding and communication between the different roles in a project.

Enterprise Architect from SparxSystems offers you a complete environment that supports you in every phase of a project, from requirements gathering to the implementation and testing of software. Hence, Enterprise Architect offers something for every role in a project and the interaction between them, but also allows the streamlining, consistency and communication of deliverables, which can be improved in many companies.

Your course leader and moderator is Christian Gijsels of GijselsDotCom Consulting. He has a lot of experience in business analysis, requirements management and modelling business processes with Enterprise Architect, and he uses this and other tools almost every day. Hence, you get a very practical and pragmatic view during this intensive, interactive and inspiring workshop, which is also available in-company.

It is not our nor Christian's intention to promote Enterprise Architect, but to improve and expand the use of SparxSystems Enterprise Architect in companies that already use this tool.

Who should attend this workshop ?

This workshop is aimed at beginner and intermediate users of Enterprise Architect van Sparx Systems, who want to learn how this tool can be used better for doing enterprise architecture, business analysis, process modelling and software development:

  • Business & system analysts
  • Process and business modellers / analysts in BPM project groups
  • Enterprise architects
  • Business Process owners
  • Project sponsors
  • Consultants in EA, BPM and requirements management

This workshop offers an end-to-end view on the efficient and productive use of Enterprise Architect, by combining different notation standards (ArchiMate, BPMN, UML), while taking maximum benefit from the structure, reuse, security and multi-user aspects of this repository-based modelling tool. We expect that you have a working and tested version of Enterprise Architect installed (this can be the trial version). Please do not forget this (laptop and software installation) so that we can get started right away. We have a lot of ground to cover in this workshop.

MODELLING EA
Modelling the Enterprise Architecture

First, we will model the Enterprise Architecture of our End-to-End model Framework. This Enterprise Architecture model will follow the rules of the META-MODEL. This allows everybody in the company to model on the same way which gives us an uniform and extensive way of reporting.

The Enterprise Architecture is being modelled in ArchiMate version 3.x.

PROCESS / BA
Modelling the Process / Business Analysis

Secondly, we are going to refine the Chain Processes of the Enterprise Architecture through Process Analysis. The Process Analysis is being modelled in BPMN version 2.x.

Nevertheless, both modelling languages will be connected to each other, also traceability will be built in. The Process Analysis consists of several layers, we will model the Business Processes (BP) and the Work Processes in BPMN. The Roles, Applications and Data in these Work Processes will be connected with those of the Enterprise Architecture in order to optimally utilize reusability and traceability. This will give us also the opportunity to do an impact analysis.

A Process Map will provide an overview of all Processes in the organization.

ACTIVITIES
Modelling the Functional & Technical Analysis

As a third step, we will develop the Activities (from the Work Processes of the Process Analysis) into Use-Cases, Activity & Sequence diagrams. All the components of these diagrams will be linked with the Process Analysis and the Enterprise Architecture or a synchronized End-to-End model. The Functional & Technical Analysis is modeled in UML version 2.x.

DATA
Modelling the Data Architecture

The data architecture of our End-to-End framework will have a different representation at all times and will be refined more and more. For example, the Data in the Enterprise Architecture will not look the same as the Data in the Process Analysis and is also different than in the Functional Analysis.

The following models are created in the End-to-End model: Domain models, Logical and Physical data models, as well as a model of a mapping of data fields.

The Data Architecture is modelled in both ArchiMate 3.x / BPMN 2.x / UML 2.x
