Coherency Management: Architecting the Enterprise for Alignment, Agility and Assurance

An enterprise architecture framework such as Scott Bernard's EA³ Cube, TOGAF or Zachman is a tool to align strategy, business and technology ("EA = S + B + T"). It is built up from many different artifacts, such as the Strategy Plan, SWOT analysis, Operating Scenarios, Process Models, Data Entity Schemas, Data Models, Use Cases, Investment Business Cases, Workforce plans, ...

But how do you use such an enterprise architecture, how do you run an EA team and EA competence center (EACC), and how do you improve the maturity of enterprise architecture throughout your company ? These topics are the key subjects of this workshop, and some of the typical questions that will be answered here are:

  • How can you show the advantages of having an enterprise architecture ? What is the added value of EA ?
  • Where and how do you start with building an enterprise architecture ?
  • What is the lifecycle of an EA ?
  • (How) Can you assess the maturity of your EA ?

About this Workshop on Advanced Enterprise Architecture:

This "Advanced EA Concepts" workshop builds upon prior knowledge of EA concepts and practices, e.g. gained in

  • the "Fundamentals of Enterprise Architecture" and
  • the "Applied Enterprise Architecture Concepts" workshops.

This specific workshop is intended to build expertise in managing EA programs, establishing/leading EA teams, winning EA work, delivering EA products, and using EA to improve mission performance. Although it is not absolutely necessary to have attended the 2 workshops above, it is required that participants understand the EA³ Cube, and have read the book on EA³ by Scott Bernard (we can send you a copy).

The course will also cover advanced concepts on linking EA to other governance processes, including capital planning, program management, security, and human resources management (HRM).

Why should you attend this Advanced Enterprise Architecure workshop ?

Following this workshop, participants will have an advanced understanding of EA concepts and practices, and should be able to more successfully establish and lead EA teams and projects in the public and private sector, as well as develop project proposals and gain/maintain customer and stakeholder confidence and support. This will result in improved EA program success, higher quality EA documentation products, improved communication with EA clients and stakeholders, and increased EA value delivery

At the end of the "Advanced Enterprise Architect Concepts" workshop, participants will receive an attendance certificate issued by I.T. Works and by EA Fellows. Of course, only participants who have attended all 3 workshops will attain the Certified Enterprise Architect" certification from CMU.

This workshop is useful for anyone who is involved in enterprise architecture, particularly those involved in EA planning, EA program management, EA implementation, EA governance or EA auditing.

This includes, but is not restricted to Business Executives, Program Managers, Technology Managers, Project Managers and Technical Staff who want to gain an understanding of how to run EA programs.

About the Enterprise Architecture Certification Programme

This Enterprise Architecture certification program will give you the knowledge and skills you need to successfully implement an EA initiative in the public or private sector. You will learn EA concepts, best practices, and tools from experienced Carnegie Mellon certified instructors. The Certification Program is built from three intensive courses which provide a comprehensive development program for Enterprise Architects: the "Fundamentals of Enterprise Architecture" course, the "Applied Enterprise Architecture" course and this "Advanced Enterprise Architecture". You will attain "Certified Enterprise Architect" status after passing three intensive exams for each of these courses.

The full certification programme will be organized again in 2010.

John Gotze (John Gøtze)
John Gotze John Gøtze

Dr John Gøtze is an independent consultant and writer, and the former Chief Editor of the Journal of Enterprise Architecture, the "pracademic" (combining practitioner and academic papers) publication of the AEA, the Association of Enterprise Architects. He is a co-founder of EA Fellows, a group of Danish enterprise architecture professionals. John has worked with government technology, enterprise architecture and open standards for more than 15 years. He is also a non-tenured associate professor at Copenhagen Business School and at the Danish IT University, where he has been teaching an enterprise architecture masters class for three years. He is also a staff member of OASIS, the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards. He is also a member of the Open Policy Group.

As chief consultant and enterprise architect at the National IT and Telecom Agency in Copenhagen from early 2001 to late 2005, Dr Gøtze was involved with developing the Danish national policy for a government-wide enterprise architecture. He was responsible for the Danish interoperability framework, which recommends government to adopt a service-oriented architecture and open standards. In the EU, he has been involved with developing the European Interoperability Framework under the Europe 2005 programme. From 1997-2001, he worked for the Swedish government as head of section in the Swedish Agency for Public Management, and helped launch the Swedish e-government strategy. He holds a M.Sc. in Engineering and a Ph.D. in participatory design, both from the Technical University of Denmark.

Dr. Gøtze has lectured and written extensively about standards, e-government and enterprise architecture over the years. As a civil servant, he has co-authored several Danish and Swedish official policy documents, for example, White Paper on Enterprise Architecture in Government (2003, see www.oio.dk) and The 24/7 Agency: Criteria for 24/7 Agencies in the Networked Public Administration (2000, see www.statskontoret.se). As a member of the Open Policy Group, he is co-author of "Roadmap for Open ICT Ecosystems" (Harvard, 2005, see www.openization.org).

John is also the co-author of the brandnew book "Beyond Alignment: Applying Systems Thinking in Architecting Enterprises" and the book "Coherency Management: Architecting the Enterprise for Alignment, Agility and Assurance".
